On July 5, 2024, over 100 South African doctors graduated from Cuban medical schools as part of the Nelson Mandela/Fidel Castro Medical Collaboration Programme​

In July, 2023, the Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Sibongiseni Dhlomo, took the lead in presiding over the graduation ceremony of more than 450 South African medical students.

In February, 2024, Dr Mzulungile Nodikida, a product of the NMFC program stepped into the top seat at the South African Medical Association (SAMA) as Chief Executive Officer of the organisation.

CAASA RESTRUCTURING

Since 1996, the program has produced over 3100 graduates distributed countrywide in South Africa in all provinces, and for ease of management, beginning in 2025 CAASA will undergo a process of restructuring. The program aims to develop provincial structures with provincial leadership of the organisation in line with the objectives of CAASA at provincial level.

Provincial Structure Development Program for CAASA

Program Name: CAASA Provincial Empowerment Initiative (CPEI)

Objective:
To establish strong provincial leadership structures that will independently implement CAASA’s objectives at the provincial level while maintaining alignment with the organization’s national vision.

Program Overview

Phase 1: Strategic Planning and Preparation (2025)

  1. Needs Assessment and Stakeholder Engagement

    • Conduct a comprehensive survey of alumni distribution across provinces to identify existing leadership and resources.

    • Engage with key stakeholders, including provincial health departments, NGOs, and community leaders, to understand regional healthcare priorities.

  2. Constitutional Amendments

    • Update CAASA’s constitution to formally recognize provincial chapters and define their roles, responsibilities, and reporting structures.

  3. Provincial Committees Formation

    • Form interim provincial committees comprising volunteer alumni representatives to oversee the initial rollout.

  4. Leadership Training

    • Organize leadership workshops for provincial representatives to ensure they are equipped with skills in governance, project management, and advocacy.

 

Phase 2: Establishment of Provincial Structures (2025-2026)

  1. Elect Provincial Leadership

    • Conduct democratic elections in each province to appoint a Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer, and other necessary roles.

  2. Provincial Office Setup

    • Identify regional offices or shared spaces for provincial chapters to operate effectively.

  3. Policy Alignment and Action Plan Development

    • Develop a standardized provincial action plan aligned with CAASA’s national objectives, customized to local needs.

    • Define key performance indicators (KPIs) for each province.

  4. Resources

    • Establish fund raising initiatives at provincial level.

    • Allocate funds and resources to provinces based on population size, alumni distribution, and healthcare needs.

Phase 3: Implementation and Monitoring (2026-2030)

  1. Decentralized Program Management

    • Provincial chapters independently implement CAASA’s objectives, focusing on:

      • Community health outreach.

      • Alumni mentorship and networking.

      • Localized research initiatives.

      • Collaboration with provincial health departments.

  2. Provincial Leadership Forums

    • Host annual provincial forums to share best practices, successes, and challenges, encouraging inter-provincial collaboration.

  3. Regular Reporting and Feedback

    • Provincial leadership submits quarterly reports to the national office on activities, progress, and challenges.

    • Develop a dashboard to monitor provincial performance against defined KPIs.

Phase 4: Long-Term Sustainability (2030 and Beyond)

  1. Strengthen Governance Structures

    • Transition provincial leadership roles to include succession planning and continuity mechanisms.

    • Introduce a rotational leadership model to foster inclusivity and engagement.

  2. Provincial Autonomy

    • Gradually increase provincial chapters’ autonomy in fundraising and decision-making while maintaining national oversight.

  3. Integration with National Health Systems

    • Partner with provincial health departments to embed CAASA alumni in key roles within the public health system.

  4. National Coordination and Growth

    • Use successful provincial models to expand CAASA’s reach and develop new initiatives based on provincial learnings.
